01The composition

Per USDA FoodData Central, honey delivers approximately 304 kcal per 100 g — about 3.0 kcal per gram — from roughly 82 g of carbohydrate per 100 g, with water making up most of the remainder. That carbohydrate arrives almost entirely as free monosaccharides: roughly 41 g fructose and 36 g glucose per 100 g — slightly fructose-forward — with minor disaccharides. Free monosaccharides require no enzymatic hydrolysis before absorption — there is no digestion step between the pouch and the bloodstream.

02Two substrates, two doors

Intestinal glucose uptake runs through the apical SGLT1 transporter; fructose enters via GLUT5 (GLUT2 carries sugars onward into the blood). This matters because the glucose pathway saturates — exogenous carbohydrate oxidation from glucose alone plateaus around 1 g per minute no matter how much you swallow. The multiple-transportable-carbohydrate research (Jeukendrup and colleagues) showed that adding fructose alongside glucose engages the second pathway, lifting measured exogenous oxidation rates as high as ~1.75 g per minute in high-intake endurance protocols (moderate combined feedings land nearer 1.2–1.3), often with less gut distress at high intakes. Honey does not need to be formulated into that ratio — it arrives from the hive already carrying both sugars, slightly fructose-forward.

03Tested in athletes

In a 2004 trial from the Exercise & Sport Nutrition Laboratory group (Earnest and colleagues, Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research), trained cyclists rode a simulated 64 km time trial fueled by honey gel, dextrose gel, or placebo. Honey performed statistically even with dextrose (a 0.39% difference), and carbohydrate beat placebo — real food matched the engineered gel watt for watt. Blood glucose and insulin responses did not differ measurably between the two gels in that protocol. Honey’s glycemic index varies widely by floral source — published values run roughly 32–87, with international tables averaging near 61, against 100 for pure glucose; the honey in that trial was a low-GI varietal.

04Why strength athletes keep it in the daily plan

Caloric density without appetite cost. In high-demand phases, the limiting factor is often the ability to keep eating. At 3 kcal/g in liquid form, honey adds meaningful energy without volume, chewing, or another sitting of food.

Liver glycogen. Fructose is metabolized hepatic-first and preferentially restores liver glycogen — the reserve that governs blood glucose maintenance overnight and between sessions. That is the mechanistic case for honey in the evening and around two-a-days: refilling the tank that an overnight fast actually drains.

Training fuel. Fast exogenous carbohydrate before and during work spares muscle glycogen at volume — the same logic as any intra-workout carb, delivered as food rather than formulation.

06Where HIVEOLTAGE fits
